Small Mudroom packed with function

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .
When I saw this small little mudroom in Country Living's 2010 House of the Year, I was so impressed with the way Katie Ridder packed so much function (and pretty!) into this small space.
Country Living Photo Lucas Allen
The two cabinets plus the basket would provide a nice amount of storage, and the little bench in between is just the right size for sitting to put on or remove shoes. That whole wall could be a fairly simple DIY project using two inexpensive prefab cabinets, don't you think? They gave the cabinets a custom look by adding chicken wire, but if country isn't your thing you could use radiator grill material like Rebecca did in this room. A nice console table for throwing keys and mail with a mirror above (and some nice accessories, of course). Keeping everything understated in color and then adding the larger scale bold red wallpaper and large white accessories gives this country entry a fresh modern flair.

What do you think?

Happy weekend...

Angled staircase wall inspiration

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

Designer Jill Johnson/Waterleaf Interiors via House of Turquoise

Hi everyone! It has been a g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s weekend so far here in Minnesota and I couldn't be happier about it! I'm spending way more time outside than in, thus very little computer time.

I did have these images in the cue queue (thank you anonymous commenter), however, so I thought today might be a good day to share them with you. Easy post for me (going with honesty is the best policy here) and some nice eye candy and inspiration for you. Win-win, right?

Foyer/Entry Ideas

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

homeandgardens.com

A few ideas for your foyer/entry today. Hope you're having a great weekend!

Marthastewart.com says, "Streamlined, wall-mounted nightstands are even more versatile in a foyer, keeping keys, leashes, and other small items at hand, as well as providing surfaces for decorative displays". I agree that it's a great idea! What do you think?

These pretty stacked boxes make a beautiful statement in this foyer and could also be used to store items that aren't often used but still need to have convenient access. Westchester Magazine

We see a lot of accessorized chests/tables in foyers and we see benches used for the function of seating in foyers, but why not use a bench as a table and accessorize it for something just a little different?

Creative Decorating Ideas - 7

marthastewart.com

Time for another mish mash of ideas to spark your decorating creativity!

Many of you may have already seen the idea in the first photo of cutting a table in half and mounting one half to the wall for a console table, but it's a good one!

I really love this next idea! It would be an inexpensive dining solution, but it wouldn't look like you were trying to save money. I think it's more of an "I'm not an ordinary decorator" statement. Don't you? The muddy chartreuse color of the table really makes it the focal point and the skirted bench slipcovers add a level of sophistication. The simple chartreuse detail on the skirt ties the look together. Did I mention yet that I love it? Well, I do. :-)

This folding screen not only softens the corner but provides an unexpected place to hang your art. Notice the unframed art leaning against the lamp...

Rather than making a headboard from shutters, they've chosen to shutter the entire focal wall in this bedroom. Notice how they've also incorporated two desks into the design. The texture of the chairs softens the look.

I like the framed wallpaper on either side of this bed. I think if it were my room I would finish it off with a mirror in the middle, though. Just a personal preference.

Pattern Inspiration - DIY Damask

For some reason, damask wasn't on my Pattern Inspiration list. That is until I saw these two fabulous DIY projects! Now I'm thinking I may have to pull another Pattern Inspiration post together in the future with more damask inspiration. Today I just wanted to highlight these two projects.

Have you seen the way Wendy at The Shabby Nest "wallpapered" her wall with this damask print wrapping paper? I absolutely love the way it turned out! See how she did it here.

Ashley at Lil Boo Blue screen printed and sewed these damask print window treatments. Here's some of what she said in her post: "I wanted drapes that were simple and elegant but also that fit our informal living style. I love how they "pool" on the floor.....adds a little drama to our everyday living space."

Didn't she do a great job? SO pretty... Complete tutorial and damask pattern here.

Hope you're having an awesome day!

Creative Decorating Ideas - 5

As you've probably figured out by now, the creative decorating ideas posts are just my sneaky way of being able to post a hodge podge of unrelated ideas. :-) Enjoy...

HGTV.com

In this Candice Olson basement family room/art studio design (above) she creates the illusion of light and space with a wall of mirrors flanked by curtains. Unfortunately you can barely see that part of the room, but it's off to the right in the photo. Thanks Lisa!

I like the way Pottery Barn used this folding screen in the corner and accessorized it.

Some of you mentioned using curtains on doors in the comments on yesterday's post. I love this example below, and I also did a post on door drapes a while back if you want to check it out.

These bamboo tiles add great texture behind this bed. It reminds me of when we talked about this reed wall that my friend, Natalie, created for a bedroom vignette at her store. Sara at Turning Stones liked that idea and decided to do it in her bedroom. Click here for her photos and tips on how to do it.

Speaking of completely unrelated things, but something that might help you complete some of your creative decorating ideas sooner than you otherwise might be able to... Did you know that Pottery Barn is having a Dream Room Giveaway and that you can register to win a $5,000 Shopping Spree through Feb 15th?

Have a great weekend!

DIY Entryway (also, please vote!)

Isn't this DIY entryway idea below clever? diyideas.com created this separate entry using three ready to assemble cabinets. See how two cabinets face the living room and the center one faces the entry? Love the creativity! The complete tutorial is available on their site.

don't forget to vote for Roeshel at DIY Showoff to win the DIY Drama Contest! (just click on the widget on my sidebar and then click "vote for this entry" - simple!) I'm sure you want to see the after photos as much as I do! It ends Friday, so let's help her win! :-)
