David Ostella will be one among many this week as some of the best karters in world head to Sam Boyd Stadium and SKUSA SuperNationals XI. Easily the most famed event in North American karting, Ostella will compete at 'SuperNats' for the first time as he moves from the junior ranks to senior, and returns to his beloved shifterkart racing with a debut in ICC.
"I am really excited and I can't wait to get in it," he said of his return to the seat of a shifter after two years away. "It is going to be way different than junior, rougher and with a lot more guys, but I have been waiting to race ICC for a while and I just really can't wait!"
Ostella had a shifter career off to an auspicious start two years ago when the 80Junior class fell out of favour, forcing a switch to JICA, Rotax Junior, and F1K Junior in Canada. The Maple, Ontario, teenager was successful in each category, picking up wins across North America over the two year run.
A Stars of Karting JICA win and National #8 came from his first season, along with a record-setting 6-for-6 championship run in the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship, something that hadn't been accomplished before, or since. This year the standout karter captured the World Karting Association JICA Grand National and overall Championships, and was vice-champion in both the Florida Winter Tour and the SRFKC racing Rotax Junior. Yet it was all just biding time for the eager Ostella, who will be out to make his mark this week.
"It's my first ICC race but I really want to leave an impression," he said of competing in S1 in Las Vegas. "The kart is faster and more powerful than what I've been racing, but I really hope to do well in it."
S1 is in the lead-off position in the schedule, and Ostella will be one of four Canadians in a field of 30+. Teams begin moving in today, with practice scheduled to begin Wednesday. Thursday brings another warm-up and official qualifying before three days of racing begins Friday. All Championship finals hit the track on Super-Sunday.
